HOT DOGS & KOOL CATS

HOT DOGS & KOOL CATS

Too Much can be deadly for Hot Dogs & Kool Cats

Take care of those Hot Dogs & Kool cats this summer. Be mindful when exercising your pet. As well as adjusting the intensity and duration of exercise to the temperature, on scorching days, limit activity to early morning or evening hours, and being especially careful with pets with white-colored ears, who are more susceptible to skin cancer, and short-nosed pets, who typically have difficulty breathing. Asphalt gets especially hot and can burn your pet’s paws. Therefore, walk your dog on the grass if possible. Always carry water with you to keep your dog from dehydrating.

Fans may not be enough.

Pets respond differently to heat than humans do. (Dogs, for instance, sweat primarily through their feet.) For one thing, fans don’t cool off pets as effectively as they do people. If leaving pets indoors, keep your cooling system around 76 -78 degrees. Not only should you make sure they have constant access to fresh water and place a fan in their favorite resting area. Cooling mats are also a good idea (Amazon has plenty to choose from).

Shade & Water for outside.

Any time your pet is outside, make sure they have protection from heat and sun and plenty of fresh, cold water. In heat waves, add ice to water when possible. Tree shade and tarps are ideal especially since they don’t obstruct airflow. A doghouse does not provide relief from heat it makes it worse.

Watch for signs of HeatStroke

Extreme temperatures can cause heatstroke. Some signs of heatstroke are heavy panting, glazed eyes, a rapid heartbeat, difficulty breathing, excessive thirst, lethargy, fever, dizziness, lack of coordination, profuse salivation, vomiting, a deep red or purple tongue, seizure, and unconsciousness.

Animals are at particular risk for heat stroke if they are very old, very young, overweight, not conditioned to prolonged exercise, or have heart or respiratory disease. For example, some breeds of dogs—such as boxers, pugs, shih tzus, and other dogs and cats with short muzzles—will have a much harder time breathing in extreme heat. The Humane Society has more info on this topic.

UPDATE OR UPGRADE YOUR HVAC THIS TAX SEASON April 04

If you know that your HVAC system, may not be in the best condition, you may consider investing your Tax Refund into replacing or upgrading your HVAC system!

Higher efficiency units may cost a little more, but can result in more rebates, incentives. Government agencies and power companies want to encourage the use of higher efficiency equipment to help reduce power consumption. Incentive, by way of direct rebates, tax credits or tax reductions (depending on your geographic location) may be offered as a reward.

TIP: Incentives are usually tied to efficiency ratings and performance. The efficiency of AC units is measured by “Seasonal Energy Efficiency Rating” or “SEER”, while heat pumps are measured by “Heating Seasonal Performance Factor” or “HSPF’ or “HERS”. A higher “SEER” or “HSPF / HERS” rating, signifies higher efficiency.

As April falls into May, the housing market also starts to pick up. So another good reason to update, or at least get your system checked over, is because, it’s one less thing to worry about if selling your home. Alternatively, if purchasing, make sure the HVAC system of your new home is inspected by a LICENSED HVAC Specialist.
