Dead Batteries:

Some thermostats rely on AAA, AA or even a 9 volt battery.  As a result when the batteries need replaced your screen may go blank. HVAC thermostat manufacturers typically recommend replacing batteries annually to ensure reliable operation.

  • Tripped Breaker or Blown Fuse:

A tripped breaker, blown fuse, or loose wiring can cut power to your thermostat. You should call a professional HVAC technician in the following situations:

If checking your circuit breaker or fuse box reveals a tripped breaker or blown fuse, reset or replace it once. In the event it trips or blows again, call a technician, as this indicates a deeper electrical issue in the HVAC system.

  • Loose or Damaged Wiring:

If you suspect loose, frayed, or damaged wiring (e.g., after inspecting the thermostat’s wiring or noticing exposed wires), avoid touching it and call a professional immediately to prevent electrical hazzards.

  • Persistent Power Loss:

If the thermostat remains blank after replacing batteries (if applicable) or resetting the breaker, the issue may stem from the HVAC system’s power supply or internal components, requiring expert diagnosis.

  • No Response After Basic Troubleshooting:

Also ensure  that the thermostat is set to “on,” this is a common error. If you have verified the breaker, and the problem persists, a technician should be called to identify more complex issues like a faulty transformer or control board.

  • Safety Concerns:

Should you notice sparking, burning smells, or unusual noises from the thermostat or HVAC system, turn off power to the system immediately and call a licensed technician straight away.
