Peak Energy times in California

Most of you might be aware that there are “peak” times throughout the warmer months, typically June to September, when you will be paying almost double what you pay “Off-peek”.  According to SoCal Edison, the “peek” times from 4 PM – 9 PM Monday thru Friday, and you pay slightly less throughout the weekend.

AC Dave shares some cooling tips

While AC Dave Heating & Air is ramping up for an extremely busy season, he wanted to share some tips, especially if you have older relatives, young children and pets living with you, or under your guardianship. These tips will take the strain off of your energy bill, while ensuring the safety and well being of all who live in your home.

For the older generation
  1. Hydration: Ensure you drink plenty of water throughout the day.
  2. Cool clothing: Wear lightweight, loose-fitting, and light-colored clothing.
  3. Cool Showers: Take cool showers or sponge baths to lower your body temperature.
  4. Fans: Use ceiling fans, portable fans, or handheld fans. Place a bowl of ice in front of the fan for an extra cooling effect.
  5. Shade: Stay in the coolest parts of the house and keep blinds or curtains closed to block out the sun.
  6. 6. Cold Compresses: Apply cold compresses or damp washcloths to pulse points like wrists, neck, ankles, and temples.
  7. Air Circulation: Open windows during cooler parts of the day (early morning or late eveing) to allow air circulation.
  8. Cool Foods: Eat light meals and avoid using the oven, instead opt for salad and cold soups.
  9. Rest: Take frequent breaks and avoid strenuous activities during peak heat hours.
  10. Public Places: Spend time in air-conditioned public places like Malls, libraries, or community centers.
Young Kids
  1.  Hydration: Keep kids hydrated with water and electrolyte drinks
  2. Light Clothing: Dress them in light breathable fabrics.
  3. Water Play: Use sprinklers, water tables, or small pools for supervised water play.
  4. Cooling Towels: Use cooling towels or cloths soaked in cold water.
  5.  Indoor Activities: Engage in indoor activities during peak heat times, such as reading, crafts, or playing with tiys.
  6. Curtains and Blinds: Keep all curtains and blinds closes to block out direct sunlight.
  7. Shady Play Areas: Ensure outdoor play areas are shaded or set up a shade tent.
  8. Frozen Treats: Offer frozen fruits or homemade popsicles.
  9. Baths: Give them a cool bath to help lower their body temperature.
  10. Cool Rooms: Use fans and place kids in the coolest room of the house.
Pet care in the summer
  1. Hydration: Provide fresh, cool water at all times.
  2. Shade and Shelter: Ensure pets have access to shady areas and cool, sheltered spots.
  3. Cooling Mats: Use pet cooling mats or damp towels fro them to lie on.
  4. Avoid Hot Surfaces: Keep pets off hot pavements and surfaces that can burn their paws.
  5. Grooming: Regular grooming to prevent matting and overheating, but avoid shaving as fur also protects against the heat.
  6. Exercise Timing: Walk pets early in the morning or late in the evening when it’s cooler.
  7. Frozen Treats: Make pet-safe treats using ice cube trays and pet-friendly ingredients.
  8. Ventilation: Ensure good ventilation and air circulation in pet areas.
  9. Indoor Play: Engage pets in indoor play during the hottest part of the day.
  10. Cool Baths: Give pets a cool bath or use a spray bottle with water to mist them lightly.
