System Failure After a Rolling Brown-Out

System Failure After a Rolling Brown-Out
Understanding the difference between a Black-out and Brown-out.
A Black-out

A blackout is an extended loss of power in a specific area. Until power is restored, all electrical appliances and systems in the affected area stop functioning.

A BROWN-OUT

A Brownout, otherwise known as a Rolling Brownout, is a deliberate reduction in voltage by the utility company to manage demand and avoid a total Blackout. This often results in dimming lights and reduced electrical appliance performance.

What to do if your HVAC Shuts Down After a Rolling Brown-Out

If your HVAC system shuts down during or after a rolling brown-out, it is essential to take specific steps to ensure it can restart safely and to avoid potential damage. Here’s what you should do:

  1. Turn Off the System – This prevents potential damage from power surges when the voltage returns to normal.
  2. Check For Damage – Inspect the system for any visible damage or tripped breakers. Reset any tripped breakers.
  3. Wait and Restart – After the voltage stabilizes, wait for a few minutes, then turn the HVAC system back on. Some systems have a built-in delay to protect the compressor, so it may take a few minutes to start.
  4. Call a Professional—If the system does not restart or you notice any unusual behavior (like strange noises or smells), contact a licensed HVAC technician for an inspection. A professional can perform a thorough inspection and address any issues that may have resulted from the brownout.
Preventative Measures for Future Protection.

Regular Maintenance –  Schedule routine maintenance checks to ensure your system is in good working condition. This can help identify potential issues before they become significant problems.

Surge Protectors – Installing surge protectors can shield your HVAC system and other sensitive electronics from power surges that often follow brownouts and blackouts.

Back Up Power Solutions – Investing in a backup generator can keep your HVAC system running during prolonged outages, ensuring your home remains comfortable.
