A power outage can hit when you least expect it, especially during these hot summer days in areas such as Santa Clarita, the A.V, and our lakes and Valley regions. At AC Dave Heating & Air, we’re here to help safeguard your HVAC system and share tips to stay cool when the power goes out. Follow these steps to keep your system safe and your family comfortable!
Protect Your HVAC Unit During a Power Outage
Power outages can stress your HVAC system with surges or sudden shutdowns. Here’s how to prevent damage:
- TURN OFF YOUR SYSTEM: As soon as you hear about a planned outage, switch off your HVAC at the thermostat, turn off the breaker, then pull the disconnect. If you have a ductless split system, power it off, then shut the breaker off to avoid surge damage when power returns.
- WAIT BEFORE RESTARTING: When the power turns back on, remember to turn the breaker on. Reinsert the disconnect. There will be a delay of about 5 minutes then the unit will power on. If it does not power on, call your HVAC company.
USE YOUR GENERATOR WISELY
DO NOT RUN A LARGE AC THAT HAS A 2O AMP BREAKER OR LARGER ON YOUR GENERATOR.
Your generator should have a 40-amp breaker or larger to handle your HVAC and your home appliances. Also, remember to limit how much power you are using. BE MINDFUL YOUR MICROWAVE DRAWS A LOT OF POWER, AS DO HAIRDRYERS, AND CAN NOT BE RUN WITH MOST GENERATORS.
SURVIVE THE HEAT DURING AN OUTAGE
No AC? No Problem! Stay cool with these practical tips:
- STAY HYDRATED: Drink plenty of water and avoid sugary or caffeinated beverages that can cause dehydration.
- BLOCK HEAT: Close blinds or curtains and use reflective blankets over windows to keep heat out.
- PROMOTE AIRFLOW: Open windows for a cross breeze and use battery-operated fans if available. Small desktop coolers will provide some cooling.
- COOL OFF: Place a cold, damp towel on your neck or wrists, or take a quick cool shower.
- GO LOW: Hang out in your basement or the lowest level of your home, where it’s naturally cooler.
- DRESS LIGHT: Choose loose, lightweight clothing for optimal comfort.
- CHECK IN WITH LOVED ONES: Keep an eye on kids, seniors, and pets-they are more sensitive to heat.
